Joining Special Olympics is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I have been volunteering with Special Olympics for roughly seven years now and it has brought me more joy than I ever could have imagined. This year was a unique experience for me because I was given the opportunity to document the 2018 Winter X Games, as well as coach one of my very own athletes from Portland, Oregon.
In 2015 ESPN invited 10 Special Olympics athletes to compete in the Winter X Games, creating the Special Olympics Unified Dual Slalom. In the event, a Special Olympics athlete is paired with an X Games teammate. Each athlete is given two timed runs, and the combined best times of each team determines the results.
This year, Special Olympics Oregon athlete, Henry Meece and I returned to Aspen to compete in the Unified Dual Slalom. With athletes competing from all around the world, the competition was stiffer than ever, so much so, that the top three teams' combined times were within four tenths of a second. With two golds already under his belt, Henry took home his 3rd gold medal.
Henry, you continue to amaze me. I honestly could not be more proud. Congratulations on your 3rd X Games gold medal!!!
